Barry Albin Electing Candidates

1.2 The purpose of the MoLP shall be the promotion of Libertarian candidates for election to public office and the promotion of libertarian ideas and philosophy. When a prepositional phrase unites the two subjects, it means they are of equal value. Somewhere along the line, the Missouri Libertarian Party has lost the first half. Any political party that no longer wants to elect candidates to public office should close up shop and go home. Continue

Teddy Springfield, MIAC Hearings

Today Bill Lower and I testified before the Missouri House Interim Committee concerning the MIAC report. Because our other fine Libertarian officials had already testified I pretty much keep it short. I did file my written testimony to support what all of us had said already. I also filed the facts from the ACLU Cisse had made about the DOD concerning protesters being low level terrorist.. There were a total of about 14 speakers, of them 4 were law enforcement officials from the MO. Highway Patr… Continue

Barry Albin The Libertarian Left

I have heard it said that the Libertarians can be divided into left and right. The Left is more concerned about Personal Rights than Property Rights and Taxes. The Right is more concerned about Property Rights and Taxes than Personal Rights. Now being a poor man who has not had to pay income taxes for 20 years, but always has to pay 16% for Social Security Taxes which I may never get, I do have a concern for taxes. I have to pay sales tax, personal property tax, communication taxes, cable taxes,… Continue

Barry Albin Election Strategy

The State Chair is pushing an election strategy. He believes that if you build the party, you will build the vote total at the November General Election. So, he proposes a grassroots marketing campaign that "pushes" the voters to the August Primary in 2010. He proposes spending $65,000 for this program, but he is spending most of that money in a way that does not support grassroots marketing. He proposes spending this money for radio, television, and Internet advertisements. First, let me say t… Continue

Barry Albin Is It Now a Crime to Be Poor?

BARBARA EHRENREICH in an opinion story in the New York Times tells us some real examples of the increasing criminalization of the poor. Traditionally, the poor, in times of stress, have been misused and abused with laws governing loitering, begging, trespassing, and public sleeping and urinating. Increasingly, the police are raiding homeless shelters and arresting all who have outstanding warrants. While some of these people are truly dangerous, because we no longer allow them to be incarcerated… Continue

Barry Albin Climate Change, the Next Excuse for Warfare

JOHN M. BRODER wrote in an article in the New York Times called Climate Change Seen as Threat to U.S. Security that our country may have to be concerned about what happens in Bangladesh and India as a result of climate change. He argues that we should be concerned about events in the Sudan. He argues that we should be concerned about mass movements of people throughout the world. I found myself asking myself, "Why?" Fundamentally, the most profound changes that "naturally" caused global warming… Continue

Teddy Mike Leaving

I believe one of the main reasons or the straw that broke the camels back for Mike leaving the party was this years convention. A bylaw change (by me) was introduced so that racists, felons, plants from other parties,or just plain wackos couldn't run on the Libertarian ticket. The bylaw change didn't say you would have to tow the line it just said any Tom, Dick or Harry couldn't run under our banner. The second bylaw change that you couldn't serve on one political parties committee and serve on an… Continue

Barry Albin Misplaced Trust and Insincere Members

I can hear in the plaintive cries of many that they are troubled, saddened, angered, or betrayed by Mike Ferguson's actions. Two things must be said about your feelings. First, politicians make alliances that may or may not last the test of time. Second, Mike Ferguson was out to help Mike Ferguson and not the party, ever. If the Party was helped along the way, then so be it. To be angry because Mike followed his desire to be involved in political activities is to ignore his support for Bob Barr,… Continue

Barry Albin Getting Started 2

I must be a real neophyte at Libertarian politics. We call a meeting to get people involved in the planning for the 2010 election. We have six definites, 1 may be, three sorries, and hundreds of no responses. I grant that I have been a member of other parties and seen how they work. I expected that the Libertarians would be even more into real activism. How wrong it turns out. I now understand why we have never elected a person to any office in Missouri on the Libertarian ticket. Come on peopl… Continue

Barry Albin Fighting For Liberty

Tomorrow we will celebrate the 233rd year of our independence from the mother that gave us law and ideals of freedom. We often hear about the sacrifice of soldiers who are fighting in questionable wars elsewhere and we are told that they are fighting for our freedom. As a Libertarian, it is hard for me to understand how Iraq was about American freedom, but I can make a connection with Afghanistan, slight as it might be. But on this Independence Day, I want to draw your attention to a much more i… Continue

Teddy Lets Get Going

The Republicrats have announced some of their major candidates for U.S. Senate and State Auditor now its time we have some people step up. It is important to raise money for the State Party but I feel it is more urgent that we have candidates declare for the two Statewide races. The odds of all the congressional races get 2% or even having candidates for all the seats is small. By declaring now those candidates can form a committee so that we can start raising money for them NOW. If I a truck dr… Continue

Barry Albin Political Clubs

Thanks for your posting John. WikiAnswers says: What is an ideological party? Ideological parties are those based on a particular set of beliefs, a comprehensive view of social, economic, and political matters. The Libertarian Party is a Party of Ideals, not a party like the Republicans and Democrats. A political club offers the party faithful a place to influence the direction of the party, to push for candidates, to raise money, to have some control in the workings of the Party, and to maint… Continue

Barry Albin 2010 Elections

In Missouri, a political party must get 2% every four years in a state wide election to remain a legal party and avoid having to use the petition method of getting a candidate on the ballot. In 2010, it is imperative that Libertarians get 2% in one state wide race. To accomplish that task we must do three things: 1) find a candidate that will naturally attract attention; 2) raise money to guarantee that the candidate is able to compete; and 3) develop a grassroots base to put up yard signs, put… Continue

Barry Albin Grassroots

Because of the heavily regulated character of the political parties in Missouri, the grassroots have little that they can do to be included in decision-making. The response in the Republicrat and Demican parties is political clubs. Political clubs allow the Joe Blow who wants to become active in politics to get his or her feet wet. They provide a political springboard from which to run for political office and the friends that they develop while participating in the political club gives the pote… Continue

Barry Albin The Unique Role of our State Officers

The Libertarian Party of Missouri is unique among the state’s political parties in that it has a different style of leadership. The Democrats and the Republicans give their State Chairs significant authority. An example of the kinds of duties that each of the other parties assign to the Chair are: Resolve disputes for composition of the various lower committees, ie. Congressional, Senatorial, Legislative, County and Judicial committees Maintain a state headquarters Conduct the statewide campa… Continue

Barry Albin A Party of Principle

What is a party of principle? How is it different from the Republicans or Democrats? A party of principle sets a platform which becomes the statement of principles of that party. It then requires its candidates to adhere to that platform or to risk expulsion from the party. Not so in the Republicans or Democrats. In those parties, a person can be diametrically opposed to a platform position and continue to run under the Party banner. However, Europe has many parties of principle and they opt for… Continue

Barry Albin First Day of Gay Pride Festival in Kansas City

The Jackson County Libertarian booth was a big success. Many people came up to say how refreshing it was to see us there. There were two Democrat clubs present. We got 21 new members of Outright Libertarians, 7 new members of the KC Libertarian Club, a number of new activists who really want to work and a really good feeling about what we did. We are hoping that we get an equal number today. Continue
